General:
When buying a skateboard for your child, get as much information from them as you can regarding their preferences - brand, size, color, etc... We have provided a brief description of all the components of a skateboard for you along with a tool to help you put together a custom complete skateboard. We also carry prebuilt completes which may satisfy your childs' skateboarding wants and needs. Keep in mind that these are only general rules for skateboarding, and that ultimately, it is the rider's preference.
Decks:
If you want to know what size of deck to buy for your child you'll want to take into consideration your child's size. "Mini" and "Mid" size decks are for small children. Usually under 10 years old. After that the decks are generally the same length unless you are looking at longboards. The width of the deck is the next thing to look at. It is measured in inches at the widest part of the board. This is where the size of the child's feet may come into play. You wouldn't normally want a deck that is narrower than the length of your foot or you will end up feeling unstable. Wider boards are used more for park and ramp skating while narrow ones are for street and tricks.
Trucks:
Trucks are measured in many different ways depending on the manufacturer. As a general rule, the axle of the truck should not be longer than the width of the deck. For a complete chart of truck sizes, click here.
Wheels:
The two determining factors in skateboard wheel are durometer and size. The durometer is the hardness of the wheel. The lower the number, the softer the wheel. Size is measured in millimeters. The larger the wheel, the faster it rides. Smaller wheels are good for tricks as they are lighter.
Safety:
We can not stress enough the importance of safety, especially for small children just starting to learn the sport of skating. We at Skateboard Showroom recommend that kids and adults of all ages should wear protective padding and helmets. Most skate parks will require it for entry. To avoid injury, children should stay away from high traffic areas, gravel, dirt, or sand. If they are skating at night, be sure it's a well lit area. So KEEP YOUR KIDS SAFE.
